A teenager with a disability tries out for her local swimming team in order to fulfil her dream of becoming a Paralympian.

Take Your Mark was a first-of-it’s-kind, fully disability inclusive project, encompassing all accessibility aspects from script to screen.

  • The project is a proof of concept for a TV series and was created by myself and my producer, Leonie Schmidt as our graduation project from MetFilm School, trying to establish a new groundbreaking way to challenge the industry standard on how to work with people with disabilities and create disabled lead storylines. This positive message is at the heart of the project and is even supported by Team GB, British Paraswimming which lead to Grace Harvey (Paralympian and Silver Medalist) featuring in our crowdfund.

The short film features Jordan Quinn who has Cerebral Palsy and was written by Andrew Burrell, an established writer with a disability who worked for BBC, Disney and Netflix shows.

Throughout the casting process with Carolyn McLeod, we cast “disability blind” for our lead (meaning anyone with any disability could apply) and used a spec script. After finding Jordan we fit the story completely to her and her experiences with her disability, as well as her experiences in life. This allowed us to be truthful to how her condition presents itself for her (as even the same condition can present itself differently for each individual) and adjusting the overall storyline - something that has never been done before in this way.
